JANET wins award from John
Top prize for excellence in e-Government Shared Services has just been won by JANET, our joint academic network, which is largely funded through DIUS (and we all see as the '.ac.uk' at the end of a website or e-mail address).
John Suffolk, Government Chief Information Officer, announced JANET's success as a 'proven shared service which has delivered effective services and efficiency gains' at Tuesday's e-Government National Awards ceremony. The awards are supported by the Cabinet Office and OGC to recognise the best in public sector ICT & e-Government.
JANET is a well-established shared service delivering the UK's world class research and education network through a high capacity digital infrastructure connecting all universities, colleges, research councils and regional broadband consortia (schools). The network serves a diverse user base of 18 million, ranging from school children to Nobel prize-winning scientists. Roll-out of the latest version, 'SuperJANET5', was delivered on time, on specification and to budget. It provides a cost-effective service across education and research - for example the connectivity offered by JANET would cost UK research more than five times its £50m annual cost if procured separately by individual organisations.
