Call for evidence: Analysis on Demand for STEM skills

The "Innovation Nation" white paper committed DIUS to develop a better understanding of the demand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills from different sectors of the economy, the need for different STEM specialisms, and the level of skills needed. A better understanding is needed on how the labour market affects supply, through its impact on choices made at all stages of education and employment.

As a result, DIUS is conducting a programme of analysis to develop a view on the UK's future needs for STEM skills. The programme of analysis will look at a number of challenging issues relating to the current and future demand and supply for STEM skills, including:

  • The current labour market position of people with STEM qualifications, in terms of their earnings and occupations or industries they work in;
  • The current and prospective supply of STEM qualifications, and how students progress from level to level;
  • Employer views of the value of STEM skills, and how this varies across STEM disciplines and by level of qualification;
  • The feasibility of constructing projections or modelling scenarios of future demand or employment patterns for those with STEM qualifications.
