Higher Education at Work High Skills: High Value
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
HIGH LEVEL SKILLS STRATEGY
Q. Why publish the high level skills strategy as a consultation?
A. We have set ambitious targets in response to the analysis of our skill needs to 2020 by Lord Leitch and we want all those involved in higher education as stakeholders, learners and providers to engage with this challenge and to help us develop a powerful consensus for change.
Q. What do we mean by high level skills?
A. In simple terms, the skills associated with higher education, or level 4+ skills
Q. Why should we be concerned about high level skills?
A. Key competitor countries have higher proportions of their adult workforce with high level skills, so we need to do better to prosper. The Government is committed to reaching the Leitch ambition of at least 40% of the adult working population qualified at level 4 and above by 2020.
Q. Who benefits from high level skills?
A. High level skills are good for the individuals who acquire them and good for the economy. They help individuals unlock their talent and aspire to change their life for the better, and they help businesses and public services to innovate and prosper.
