Enterprise & Business Support

The Enterprise Directorate within BIS works across Government and the regions to develop and influence policies to boost enterprise, start ups and small business growth.

Woman talking to man in office

BIS's Enterprise Directorate has specialist expertise in policies to both strengthen the enterprise environment for small businesses and to enable more people and communities to set up in business. The Enterprise Directorate's policy work is supported by a strong research, statistical and analytical function (Analytical Unit) , and it maintains international links, especially with other EU member states and with the United States.

Supporting Business

The Enterprise Directorate aims to boost enterprise, start ups and small business growth by helping small and medium businesses to start and thrive through:

  • Improved access to finance.
  • A more positive business environment which supports growth and ease of starting a business, and where new businesses and economic opportunities are more evenly shared between regions and industries.
  • A major programme to reform the way that people running a business get the information, guidance and support they need to start and grow a business
  • Building a more entrepreneurial culture, equipping people with the skills and ambition to start a business.
  • Recognising and celebrating successful business through the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

Business advice is currently provided through the BusinessLink web site.
