STEM and Science Workforce

The Government is committed to increasing the numbers of young people choosing to study STEM post 16, and to ensuring that UK has a skilled workforce to compete effectively in the global economy. The Government is continuing to work on delivery of the commitments to improve participation and attainment in STEM subjects.

DIUS works closely with DCSF on the STEM skills agenda to ensure that the needs of employers are met, that the Science Curriculum is sufficiently challenging for the top 25% and increases scientific literacy of the population at large, and that there are good enrichment and enhancement activities as part of science education. On the latter, DIUS has made a major investment in STEMNET, the science, technology, engineering and mathematics network and Science and Engineering Ambassadors programme with over 19,000 ambassadors acting as role models in schools across the UK.
