DIUS allocates the Science Budget into research via the 7 Research Councils for which the Director General for Science and Research, Professor Adrian Smith, is responsible

Professor Adrian Smith

In recent years the Government has substantially increased spending on science. Between 1997 and 2009 the science budget has more than doubled. By the end of the current spending review period in 2010/11 the Science Budget will be just under £4 billion. This has enabled the Research Councils to substantially raise their support for research.

The Allocations of the Science Budget 2008/9 to 2010/11, published in December 2007, provides more detail on the areas of spend.
