Implementing the New Approach to ESOL

We are pleased to publish Implementing the New Approach to ESOL which sets out the experiences and early lessons learnt from the 31 ESOL ‘new approach’ pathfinder areas. These local authorities, working with their partners, agreed to become early adopters of the ‘new approach’ to ESOL which we set out in May, ahead of national roll-out this autumn.

A New Approach

The New Approach to English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) built on the responses made to the ESOL consultation in 2008 to enable local ESOL provision to have a greater focus on social inclusion and community cohesion. It set out a greater role for local authorities in working with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), providers and other partners to identify and meet the needs of the most vulnerable people in their area who need to improve their English skills.
